A window that will not close, a cracked pane, a foggy double-glazed unit, a corroded frame or a seized hinge is not just an annoyance in Bali — in a climate of horizontal monsoon rain and constant insect pressure, a faulty window quickly becomes a leak, a draught and an open door for mosquitoes. The good news is that the vast majority of window problems we see across the island are repairable, and a quick repair costs a fraction of a full window replacement. You do not need to live with a broken window or rush to rip the whole thing out.
This guide walks through the common window problems we fix in Bali, how to tell when glass replacement will do versus a full window replacement, the small fixes to seals and hinges that make a disproportionate difference, and how long a typical repair takes. We carry out window repair right across the island — Canggu, Seminyak, the Bukit and Uluwatu, Ubud, Kuta, Sanur and Denpasar — and same-day service is often available for common faults. If something is broken now, you can send us a message and describe it.
Bali's climate produces a fairly predictable set of window faults, and recognising yours helps you describe it when you get in touch. The problems we are called out to most often:
Many of these share a root cause: Bali is brutal on the wrong product and on neglected maintenance. As we cover in our complete guide to windows in Bali, choosing the right materials up front prevents most of them — but when a fault has already appeared, the right move is a targeted repair.
The most common question we get is whether a problem needs new glass or a whole new window. The deciding factor is almost always the condition of the frame.
Glass replacement is the answer whenever the frame is structurally sound and only the glass is at fault. If a single pane is cracked, we cut and fit new glass into the existing frame. If a double-glazed unit has gone foggy, we replace the sealed glass unit — the two-pane cassette — while keeping the frame, hardware and seals you already have. This restores both clarity and insulation at a fraction of the cost of a new window, and it is usually a quick job once the right glass is to hand. Glass replacement also lets you upgrade at the same time, for example swapping single glazing for laminated or acoustic glass while the sash is open.
Full window replacement becomes the sensible choice when the frame itself has failed — badly corroded aluminium that is pitting through, timber that has rotted or warped beyond adjustment, or a unit so distorted that it can no longer be made to seal. In those cases, repairing the glass alone is throwing money at a frame that will keep failing. Replacement is also worth considering if you are repairing the same window repeatedly, or if you want to upgrade an old single-glazed unit in a noisy or coastal spot to something far better suited to the location.
We always inspect before recommending, and we are honest about it: if a window can be sensibly repaired, we will tell you, because a reputation for not over-selling is worth more to us than one extra frame. The full economics of repair versus replace are covered in our window installation guide.
Some of the most valuable repairs we do are also the smallest and cheapest. Seals and hinges are the unsung parts of a window, and when they fail the whole unit underperforms even though it looks fine.
Seal and gasket replacement is the classic example. The EPDM rubber gasket that runs around a window is what actually keeps wind-driven rain and air out. Under Bali's UV the cheaper rubbers harden, shrink and crack, and once that happens the window leaks and whistles even when closed and locked. Replacing the gasket with a UV-stable EPDM seal is inexpensive and transforms how the window performs — it stops the draught, stops the leak, and quietens the unit, all without touching the frame or glass.
Hinge repair and adjustment is the other high-value small fix. A casement window that drops, binds or refuses to close is very often a hinge that has worn or worked loose, letting the sash sag out of square. Adjusting or replacing the hinges — and the friction stays that hold the window at an angle — brings the sash back into alignment so it seats cleanly against the gasket again. The same logic applies to sliding windows: a worn roller or a clogged track is a small, cheap part, but replacing it turns a heavy, juddering panel back into one that glides. Add lock and handle replacement to that list, and a large share of "the window is broken" calls turn out to be a quick parts swap rather than a major job.
Most window repairs in Bali are fast. To set expectations:
For the common faults — a window that will not close, a broken hinge or handle, a failed lock, a cracked standard pane — same-day repair is often possible in the main Bali areas, and we will give you a realistic timeframe as soon as you describe the problem. The faster you act on a leaking or insecure window, the less chance the monsoon has to turn a small fault into water damage. You can book a repair visit here.
Do you offer same-day window repair in Bali? For common faults — a window that will not close, a broken hinge or handle, a failed lock, or a cracked pane where we can source matching glass quickly — same-day repair is often possible across the main Bali areas. Custom glass units and bespoke parts take a little longer to fabricate, but we will tell you the realistic timeframe when you message us.
My window will not close properly — can it be fixed? Almost always, yes. A window that will not close is usually caused by worn hinges, a misaligned sash, a faulty multi-point lock or debris in the track rather than a ruined frame. We realign, adjust or replace the offending part, and the window seals correctly again — far cheaper than replacing the whole unit.
Can you replace just the glass and keep my existing frame? Yes. If the frame is sound and only the glass is cracked or fogged, we replace the glass alone and keep the frame. For a foggy double-glazed unit we replace the sealed glass unit; for a single cracked pane we cut and fit new glass. This is much cheaper than a full window replacement.
Why is my double-glazed window foggy inside? A foggy window means the seal around the sealed glass unit has failed and moisture has got between the panes. You cannot clean it because the condensation is inside the glass. The fix is to replace the sealed glass unit while keeping the existing frame, which restores clarity and insulation.
Is it cheaper to repair or replace a window in Bali? Repair is almost always cheaper when the frame is structurally sound and the problem is a seal, hinge, lock or single pane. Replacement makes sense when the frame itself is badly corroded, rotted or distorted. We give an honest recommendation after inspecting the window rather than defaulting to the more expensive option.
